Project background:
Every year hundreds of pedestrians are killed or injured on roads and highways across United Kingdom. For example, during 2004 in the UK there were 31,836 traffic incidents involving pedestrians recorded, of these 6,257 were classed as serious injuries and 517 were lives lost1

The Waterfront Centre is Jersey's premier family entertainment centre comprising nightclub, 10-screen multiplex Cinema, Health Club, Leisure Pool and bars and restaurants.  With over 35,000 visitors in its first two months of operation, the centre has proved an irresistible attraction to locals and tourists alike.
Situated at the heart of the St. Helier waterfront district, pedestrian access to the centre from the Esplanade Square requires both the busy slip ramps of the A1 Rue de La Liberation to be crossed.

To provide better safety for pedestrians at crossings, such as at St Helier,  Astucia have developed a crossing system comprising of flush road studs each containing 14 high brightness Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) cabled together and integrated with the traditional crossing control system and warning lights where applicable. Additionally studs can be installed in the carriage centre line at the approach to the crossing to strobe towards the oncoming traffic to provide further advanced warning of pedestrians using the crossing ahead.

Installation:
To enhance the Zebra  crossings on both the busy slip ramps of the A1 Rue de La Liberation, outside the popular Waterfront Centre, Astucia hardwired flush road studs are installed at approximately one metre spacing across the road, down either side of the crossing and are interfaced to flash in unison with the traditional zebra crossing beacon, the studs flash intensely providing clear warning of the crossing ahead for motorists directly in their natural line of vision.

Jersey A1 Crossing installation, click to view video footageThe Astucia F series hardwired flush road studs are visible to drivers up to 1000 metres away, are simple to install, need little maintenance with low power consumption.  As they only protrude above the road surface by 4mm they are pedestrian, cycle and motorcycle friendly as well as being snowploughable.

Benefits:
The use of the Astucia crossing systems provide drivers with advanced warning of the location of crossings, directly in their natural field of vision especially in areas that have no additional street lighting, or where the road geometry or other obstructions compromises the drivers vision of the location of the crossing and pedestrians that might be actually on the crossing at the time. They are also particularly effective in areas prone to reduced visibility due to prevailing weather conditions such as fog, rain or low direct sunlight periods when glare prevents traditional overhead crossing warning lights from being seen.

Commenting on the installation Bob Baudains, Civil Engineer of Jersey Transport and Technical Services Department said:  "Before the Astucia lighting system was installed there were real concerns for the safety of pedestrians at these crossings. Visibility and advanced warning for motorists about the approaching crossing has been greatly improved. It is now far safer for the many pedestrians visiting the Waterfront Centre."
